Too Busy for Skincare? Start with a Simple Routine

You finally make it to the bathroom at the end of a long day. You look at the products on the counter, think about washing your face, and wonder whether you have enough energy for one more thing.

Or maybe your mornings move so quickly that caring for your skin barely crosses your mind until you’re already out the door.

I understand why skincare can slide to the bottom of the list. When work, family, and everyday responsibilities need your attention, even a few minutes for yourself can feel hard to find.

But caring for your skin can be simple enough to fit into your real life.

I am worth the time it takes to take care of myself

Let’s spill a little tea on how to begin. ☕

Start with the basics

It’s easy to look at someone else’s skincare routine and think you’re missing something. There’s always another serum, another tool, or another step to try.

Before adding more, get comfortable with the basics: gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends this simple approach as a foundation for skincare. aad.org

You can build from there based on your skin, your preferences, and what you can realistically maintain.

A routine should be something you understand well enough to use without standing at the sink wondering what comes next.

In the morning: keep it manageable

Think of your morning routine as a small part of getting ready for the day.

Cleanse gently, apply moisturizer suited to your skin, and include sun protection. Look for a sunscreen labeled broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water-resistant. Follow its directions, including reapplying when you’re outdoors. Shade and protective clothing matter, too. aad.org

To make the habit easier, keep the products you use each morning together in one convenient spot.

You might connect skincare with something you already do, such as brushing your teeth. That gives it a familiar place in your morning instead of leaving it as something you’ll remember “when there’s time.”

In the evening: give yourself a simple finish

By evening, you may be ready to skip everything and climb into bed.

Make your routine easy to begin. Keep your cleanser, moisturizer, and a clean washcloth within reach. If you wear makeup, include a makeup-removal step appropriate for the products you use.

No makeup left behind

You can also move your routine earlier. There’s no rule that says you have to wait until you’re nearly asleep to get ready for bed.

Try taking care of your face when you change into comfortable clothes or before you settle in to watch your favorite show.

And if you miss a night? Begin again the next day. There’s no need to turn one missed routine into a reason to give up.

Maybe your skin feels dry. Maybe it gets oily during the day. Maybe you already own products but aren’t sure how they fit together.

Those questions are a good place to start.

Rather than copying someone else’s entire routine, consider what you need help understanding:

  • Which products fit my skin?

  • What order do I use them in?

  • What belongs in my morning routine versus my evening routine?

  • How can I keep this manageable?
