The Quiet Sentence I Heard All Weekend: “I’m Just So Busy”

What conversations with women at the community expo reminded me about carrying too much

This past weekend, I spent two days inviting women to pause, take a breath, and think about a question we do not ask ourselves nearly often enough:

“What helps you unwind?”

The question was part of the What Is Your De-Stress Type? Quiz at my Beauty That Blesses booth.

But the longer I stood there and listened, the more I realized that the quiz was opening the door to a much bigger conversation.

The details of each woman’s life were different, but the same quiet sentence kept surfacing:

“I’m just so busy.”

Sometimes she said it with a laugh.

Sometimes with a sigh.

Sometimes she did not say the words at all—but I could see them in her face when we talked about stress and how difficult it can be to find even a few minutes for herself.

Over and over, women told me that stress and being too busy had become a normal part of their lives.

Not a temporary season.

Not an unusually difficult week.

Normal.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer another woman is a moment to pause and feel understood.

WHEN “BUSY” BECOMES PART OF OUR IDENTITY

Many of us have been busy for so long that we hardly notice it anymore.

We move from one responsibility to the next, caring for our families, doing our work, answering messages, solving problems, keeping appointments and remembering the things everyone else depends on us to remember.

When someone asks how we are doing, “busy” rolls off our tongues almost automatically.

We may even feel uncomfortable when we are not being productive.

But beneath all that busyness, there is often a woman who is tired.

Not necessarily tired in a way that one good night of sleep can fix.

She is tired of carrying so many unfinished thoughts.

Tired of feeling responsible for everyone and everything.

Tired of wondering why she cannot seem to keep up with the version of life she sees everyone else living.

And perhaps most of all, she is tired of believing that her struggle means she is doing something wrong.

YOU ARE NOT FAILING AT LIFE

My beautiful friend, feeling overwhelmed does not mean you are weak, lazy, ungrateful or failing at life.

It may simply mean that you have been carrying a lot for a very long time.

The answer is not always another planner, another productivity method or another perfect routine.

Sometimes the first thing we need is permission to acknowledge what we are carrying.

We need someone to say:

“Yes, that is a lot.”

“You are not the only one who feels this way.”

“You are allowed to need a moment.”

That is what I saw happening at the expo.

Women were not looking for one more complicated thing to add to their lives. They responded to the possibility that stress relief could be simple, personal and realistic.

Over the two days, 16 women paused long enough to take the De-Stress Type Quiz. Many more stopped to talk, accepted a small breathing-room reminder or took home a CoffeeDates packet.

What seemed to resonate most was not the idea of creating a flawless self-care routine.

It was the idea of finding small moments that could fit into the lives they were already living.

Small moments can help us recognize what we need before stress takes over the entire day.

BREATHING ROOM DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BIG

We sometimes imagine that caring for ourselves requires an empty afternoon, a quiet house or a completely cleared schedule.

Those things would be lovely.

They are also not the reality for many women.

Breathing room can begin much smaller.

It might be sitting in your car for two quiet minutes before walking into your next responsibility.

It might be drinking the first few sips of your coffee without checking your phone.

It might be stepping outside, listening to one meaningful song, washing your face slowly or whispering a prayer before responding to another request.

These moments do not remove every responsibility.

They do, however, remind you that you are still a person inside all those responsibilities.

You are not merely the woman who remembers, fixes, organizes, serves and carries.

You are a whole woman—and you deserve moments that help you hear yourself again.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO EARN THE PAUSE

The unfinished list will still be there.

Someone may still need something.

Your life may not become less complicated today.

You are still allowed to pause.

You do not have to earn breathing room by finishing everything first. If you wait until nothing needs your attention, you may wait forever.

Instead, begin with one small question:

“What do I need in this moment?”

Not for the rest of your life.

Not even for the rest of the week.

Just this moment.

Perhaps you need an anchor before your day begins.

Perhaps you need a reset in the middle of the noise.

Perhaps you need help releasing the day before you go to sleep.

Or perhaps your life calls for tiny moments of relief wherever you can find them.

There is no wrong answer.

The right kind of breathing room is the kind that fits your real life.

YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE

That may be the most important thing I carried home from the expo.

You are not the only woman who feels stressed.

You are not the only woman who struggles to slow down.

You are not the only woman wondering how to care for herself without adding another demand to her day.

There are women all around you quietly carrying more than anyone realizes.

Maybe we do not need to pretend that we have mastered it all.

Maybe we can give one another permission to admit that life is a lot sometimes—and remind each other to let go and grab a piece of peace wherever we can.

Because breathing room is not a reward for getting everything right.

It is part of how we keep showing up as the women we were created to be.
