When Life Feels Too Full, Make a Little Room

October 13, 2026•3 min read

Have you ever opened your phone, looked at your calendar, or glanced around your home and thought, “I just need a little room”?

Everywhere you look, something seems to need your attention. An unanswered message. An unfinished project. A decision you keep putting off because you don’t have the energy to make it.

And underneath all of that are the things that don’t fit neatly on a to-do list: concern for your child, questions about the future, and the effort of being the person others depend on.

You can love your life and still feel overwhelmed by what it asks of you.

Sometimes, the kindest next step is to make a little room.

Lead: Choose what needs your attention today

When everything feels urgent, it can be hard to decide where to begin.

Try asking yourself one smaller question:

What truly needs my attention today?

Maybe it’s an appointment, one work commitment, or a conversation you need to have. Choose something specific enough that you’ll know when it’s done.

Then ask, “What can wait?”

That second question matters, too. A good idea doesn’t have to become today’s assignment. A project can matter to you even while it sits on the shelf for a little while.

If you’re caring for a teen or young adult who still needs significant support, you may have responsibilities you simply cannot set aside. Start with something you do have a choice about: an extra commitment, a notification, or the expectation that you’ll answer every message immediately.

Leading your day can begin with one thoughtful choice about where your attention goes.

Live: Make room in one small place

You don’t need to organize your whole house or sort out your entire future this afternoon.

Choose one small place where you’d welcome a little breathing room.

Clear a corner of the table so you can sit with your coffee. Close the browser tabs you don’t need right now. Put the papers for a future project in a folder. Leave a few minutes between two commitments, if your day allows it.

The goal is to create one place where you can pause without immediately being reminded of ten more things to do.

Some days, even that will feel like too much. On those days, you can simply sit down for a moment. You don’t have to earn a pause by clearing something first.

Exhale: Let this moment be enough

If it’s available to you, take a brief pause somewhere comfortable.

Let your shoulders soften. Unclench your jaw. Breathe comfortably, without forcing anything.

You might say to yourself:

“There is more to do, and I can pause for a moment.”

If prayer is part of your life, you might offer a simple one:

“God, help me see what is mine to carry today. Give me grace for what needs to wait.”

You may get up from that pause and return to a busy, complicated day. But you’ve given yourself a moment of care within it. That counts.

Your piece of peace this week

Choose one thing to give your attention to, one thing to let wait, and one small moment to pause.

Keep it simple enough to fit the life you actually have today.

You deserve care in the middle of that life—even with the unanswered messages, unfinished projects, and people who still need you.

What could you let wait today to give yourself a little breathing room?
